Diocese of Raleigh Bishop Luis Zarama will visit for the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. in the PAC. Parents are always welcome to join us for Mass!

Everyone in the JPII community is invited as we look forward to welcoming Chris Herren to campus this Wednesday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. in the gym as our keynote speaker for our wellness kickoff event of the year. An extraordinary basketball player, Chris Herren was a celebrated star in his native Fall River, MA before graduating high school. He went on to play at Boston College and Fresno State, two seasons in the NBA – including one with his hometown team, the Boston Celtics – and seven seasons overseas before losing it all to the disease of addiction. With the unwavering support of his family and friends, Chris has been sober since August 1, 2008, and he will share his story in hopes of making a positive difference in the lives of those in our school community.

Students now have the following options for after school from 2:30-3:15 p.m.:

Departmental tutoring
Study hall rooms (homework, waiting for practices to start, or waiting to be picked up)
Clubs or play practices
Leave campus

The gym is now locked from 2:30-3:30 and students should not be “hanging out” outside on the academic or athletic campus. If you are a student-athlete and leave campus, you should not return until 3:15 since coaches are not responsible for starting practices and supervising players until 3:30.

SGA GENERAL MEETING

Current SGA members and any students wanting to help with SGA this year should come to the General Meeting on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Mrs. Lyles room (N115). Freshmen interested in holding an office will need to complete the paperwork linked below. Additional paperwork will be available in the main office.

Auditions for the fall play will be held on Monday, August 28 right after school in the PAC. Interested students should come prepared with a short memorized monologue.

Student and parent involvement by volunteering at school events is needed in order to make the events happen! Any parent or student (including students who need service-to-school hours) can use the button below to access current volunteer opportunities. Opportunities are added throughout the year and more opportunities will be added in the next few days.

Now that all students have a MacBook, this is a reminder that MacBooks are for educational use only and playing games is not considered an educational use!

SATURDAY SERVICE AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES

The 2nd Saturday of each month students are encouraged to be of service at Catholic Charities by helping to pack food for distribution to our local community and the communities in surrounding counties. The first opportunity of the year is Saturday, September 9 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Click/tap the button below to sign up!

FEES POSTING IN SEPTEMBER

The following fees will be billed to students' Finalsite accounts in September:

fall sports fees - $50 (cheer, cross country, football, boys soccer, girls tennis, girls volleyball)
fall semester elective course fees - $75 per semester (pottery, welding, woodworking)
locker locks - $5

This year's Attractions Dining and Value Guide fundraiser to benefit the entire school started last week. Students are responsible for the 4 books they were given and asked to sell all 4 for $25 each. The $100 can be turned into the main office. Students who need more books can see Mr. Harvey in the main office.

NEW THIS WEEK AT JPII FEATURE: WEEKLY STUDY TIPS

Writing Center Coordinator Ms. Thomsen will provide students with a different tip each week in This Week at JPII to aid them in their studies.

Study Tip #1: Annotating a Novel

Summer book discussions are coming to a close in the English department, so get the most out of your next novel by annotating with a template that tracks characters, conflicts, themes, and page numbers. I know many of you spend a lot of time commuting to JPII and sporting events, so this template will come in handy as you read your text from your MacBook or paperback wherever you are! You can use the online or a paper template (stop by to get a paper version from me; I have a bunch in my cart).

Each week, I will post a new video (3-5 minutes). You can also join my "JPII Weekly Study Tips" Google Classroom to download the materials. The class code is vsffbqf.

Invite your friends and neighbors and Join us for a night of adults-only fun at the tables on Saturday, October 7 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. in the gym. We will have seven Blackjack tables, two Roulette tables, and a Craps table that will be open from 6:00-9:30 p.m.; then casino chips can be used to purchase raffle tickets for fantastic items from local businesses. Auction items will also be available.

Varsity Cheer will be hosting tryouts to add up to 5 ladies to the team for basketball season. If you are interested:

please email Coach Holley to receive tryout material (unfortunately girls who plan to play on the varsity basketball team will not be able to participate in cheer for the basketball season)
