Dear JPII families,

I hope this memo finds everyone happy and healthy! As I am observing teachers and students in classes I am pleased to see dynamic lessons being taught and engaged students participating. Spring is almost here, and there is a new energy filling our school. It’s amazing how beautiful weather can impact the learning environment!

This past week was a busy one on campus! Friday our spring production cast met for a first read-through, spring sports started, and we hosted Fr. James Moore of the Dominican Order for Ash Wednesday Mass and theology classes on Friday.

Looking ahead, this week we will welcome former JPII Chaplain and current Pastor at Holy Family in Elizabeth City Fr. Nick Cottrill to celebrate Mass with us on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. As a reminder, families are always welcome to join us in the celebration of Mass!

Also, Jay Graves, who has been leading our faculty with diversity, equity, and inclusion training, will be here on Friday at 9:00 a.m. to lead a session with our students on the importance of being intentional in our words and actions.

A request from our coaches: if your child is being picked up after games and/or practices, please do your best to make sure they are picked up in a timely manner. Our coaches and faculty are responsible for them until they leave campus.

We are seeing an increase in students not bringing lunch to school. An empty stomach impacts the learning process so please be sure your students are either packing a lunch or have ordered lunch through MyHotLunchbox. We have a limited supply of items for students who forget but not enough to support this on an ongoing basis. Also, it is not feasible to have lunches dropped off and then delivered to every student so in fairness to all students we ask that you please support this school policy by helping your child plan ahead.

Tuesday is a Pajama Day fundraiser for prom. Students who would like to participate pay $3:

Our spirit rock is a great way to celebrate birthdays, show your school spirit, or congratulate students for their accomplishments! Reservations are on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be paid for at the time of reservation. The weekly fee is $25 and all money raised from the spirit rock will be used to fund general academic needs. Bracket Mania is our spring school-wide fundraiser and your picks could be worth $250-$1,000 - but only if you play! Filling out a bracket for the college basketball tournament is an annual American tradition. There’s nothing like picking a winner and whether you pick teams by stats, colors, mascots, or you just don’t like the other team – don't miss your opportunity to win $250-$1,000 while supporting the academic and athletic needs of JPII students! Here’s how it works:

Since brackets are filled out online, anyone anywhere can participate so share this opportunity with family and friends near and far!
Brackets are $20 each – buy 1 or buy more than 1 – you can enter as many times as you’d like.
Reserve your bracket(s) now by paying with a credit card using the form on this page or Venmo @JPIICatholic with the note “Bracket Mania” and your email address.
Shortly after the teams are announced on Sunday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. ET, those who have purchased brackets will receive a link and password to fill out their bracket(s).
All brackets must be completed by 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 17th!
Points are awarded for each winning pick; point values increase as the tournament progresses.
The top 10 point leaders in each of the first 5 rounds will be placed in a raffle drawing to win a cash prize.
After the final game, all individuals with the highest point totals and the winning team selected will be placed in a raffle to win the grand prize.

PRINTING ASSIGNMENTS

We have identified the fix for students to be able to print assignments at home from their MacBook instead of the main office and will be pushing this to all MacBooks early this week. Thank you for your patience!

PI(E) DAY IS NEXT WEEK!

Our teachers are such great sports - back in October, several of them were pied in the face at the Homecoming Pep Rally! Ms. Gilroy, Mrs. Mabe, and/or Ms. Verzaal are all willing to get pied on Pi Day for charity. Here's how it works:

Ms. Gilroy, Mrs. Mabe, and Ms. Verzaal will each have a collection jar.
Students can place donation money in any jar this week and the teacher with the most money will get pied at assembly on Pi(e) Day (March 14)!
BONUS: If we raise a total of $200 then all 3 of them will get pied!

The money raised will be donated to JDRF which helps fund research for Type I diabetes.

SCHEDULES FOR 2022-2023

It is already time to start thinking about classes for next school year! Ms. Blanton will be meeting with students individually during the month of March. If parents are interested in attending meetings, please email her to schedule an appointment. She is reserving Wednesdays and will have time slots available from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

NEXT DRIVER'S ED CLASS IS IN MAY

Students who need to take driver's ed and will be 14-and-a-half as of Monday, May 9 are eligible to participate in a class that will be held at the school May 9-13 and 16-20 from 3:15-6:15 p.m. each day. Students cannot miss any of the days or they will not get credit and do not receive a refund. Cost is $60 payable to JPII. A reminder that orders are pulled each Tuesday. Therefore, orders placed on Wednesday add a week to the processing time.

DIGITAL TICKETING FOR SPRING SPORTS

We are now utilizing HomeTown Ticketing for entry fees for spring sports. Tickets can be purchased online or by downloading the HomeTown Fan app in the Google Play store or Apple App store. In the very near future, we will no longer accept cash or Venmo at the gate; only digital tickets will be accepted for home sporting events.

TAR HEEL BOYS OR GIRLS STATE APPLICATIONS DUE NEXT WEEK

The Greenville American Legion Post 39 is seeking high school juniors who would like to attend the prestigious Tar Heel Boys or Girls State program. The post will sponsor and pay the tuition fee for selected delegates to attend the week-long camp at Catawba College. The girls’ dates are June 12-18 and the boys will attend June 19-25. The program is designed to give delegates hands-on experience in forming and running all levels of NC state government while developing leadership and communicative skills. Become an informed citizen and stand out among your peers! Applicants must be a rising senior, 16-18 years old, have a 3.0 unweighted GPA or equivalent, and be a resident of the state for at least one year. Would you consider hosting a teen from Northern Ireland for 3 weeks this summer?

It is easier than you may think!

The Ulster Project pairs your teen with a teen from Northern Ireland from June 27-July 18. The teens (hosting and visiting) have a schedule of fun activities, service projects, church services, trips, and times of discovery that will keep them busy. Local counselors and counselors from Northern Ireland will be supervising the kids during all scheduled activities.

What do we ask of you and your family?

Provide a loving home with either a private room or a shared bedroom with your teen
Drop your teens off and pick them up from activities (participating families help each other out; if there are any schedule conflicts during those 3 weeks, that can usually be worked out)

For the 2nd consecutive year, UNC Assistant Basketball Coach Jeff Lebo and his son Creighton will host a basketball camp at the JPII Athletic Center for boys and girls ages 5-14.
