St. John Paul II

The feast day of the patron of our Catholic High School, St. John Paul II, is today, October 22. In preparation for the celebration, our school community began a Novena (nine days of prayer) on October 13 through October 21. Each school morning, the students and faculty of JPII have reflected on the life and legacy of St. John Paull II and have prayed through his intercession.

Theology classes have focused on different aspects of his life and teachings such as his devotion to the Blessed Mother, his teachings on Faith and Reason, and the Pope's creation of World Youth Day!

On Friday, our school community celebrated his feast day by honoring two of St. John Paul II's great loves--the rosary and young people! The freshmen led a living candlelight rosary for the whole school community (including the Hail Mary in French by Noémie, one of our new students from France), all enjoyed JPII's favorite Polish childhood dessert, Kremówka (also known as papal cake). Many thanks to parent Silvia Frizzelle for making the dessert for our entire school! Students ended the celebration with outdoor fun and fellowship!

OPEN HOUSE FOR FAMILIES INTERESTED IN THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR IS SATURDAY AT 10 A.M.!

Encouraging your friends to come see what we have to offer is an important way all families can help our school continue to grow! Please help us spread the word by sharing the event on Facebook.

This is a floating event with a short program at the beginning followed by opportunities to visit with teachers in their classrooms and then with our coaches at the gym.

November 10, 2023 is the priority deadline for applications for the 2024-2025 school year. Students who apply by November 10 will receive a decision letter by December 8.

Study Tip #9: Writing Templates to the Rescue!

Do you use writing templates? This video shows you the ropes on how to incorporate templates, and how to present your ideas in a more professional way on paper. You can find the materials used in this video at our Google classroom. I am at JPII every afternoon: 6th period in S105 and 7th period in S104, and 2:30-3:30 in S104, so stop by!

Each week, I will post a new video (3-5 minutes). You can also join my "JPII Weekly Study Tips" Google Classroom to download the materials. The class code is vsffbqf.

Ticket ordering for this year's fall dinner theatre close THIS FRIDAY! Shows will be held Thursday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 4. Get your tickets now as seating is limited!

FALL PLAY TICKETS

SERVERS NEEDED! If you would like to be one of our servers for the fall dinner theater (and earn service hours!), please email Ms. Goodman ASAP. Shows will be Thursday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 4 in the evening. Additional service opportunities for the dinner theatre will be shared soon.

It was "Christmas" in Mudville last week and beginning potter Georgia Jeannette created this piece - a cat which was a four week project! Mrs. K is proud of Georgia and all her "mudbugs" for their hard work and persistence on their projects!

ACT PRACTICE TESTS

Our next practice ACT session will be held on Saturday, November 4 in the North Hall Science Classrooms. All juniors are strongly encouraged to attend and interested sophomores are also welcome.

ACT practice tests will be held on the following Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.:

The ACT will be administered to 11th grade students on campus on Tuesday, April 9.

Students who are interested in traveling to Ireland and England in June of 2025 are invited to attend an interest meeting THIS TUESDAY, October 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the PAC. Please bring a parent with you!

The field trip to Washington, D.C. is now open to all students. The trip will take place May 1-3 and the cost for students is $450; parents are $550 for a double or triple with roommate(s) or $775 if you prefer a single room. The deadline to sign up and pay the non-refundable $100 deposit is Nov. 3.

The Attractions Dining and Value Guide fundraiser has ended. Any outstanding books not turned in as of Friday, October 20 will be charged to your Finalsite Enrollment account. If you have questions, please contact Mr. Harvey at charvey@jp2highschool.com.

DRIVER'S ED

Students who will be 14-and-a-half as of Monday, November 27 and need to take driver's ed are eligible to participate in the class that will be held at the school Monday-Friday, November 27-December 8 from 2:45-5:45 p.m. Students cannot miss any of the days or they will not get credit and do not receive a refund. The next class will be held April 22-May 3; both the November/December and April/May sessions are available on the registration form.

The North Carolina Governor's School is a 4-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of the two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline and does not involve credit, tests, or grades. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas, is located on two campuses of up to 400 students each.

Students who are interested in applying for Governor's School for the summer of 2024 need to contact Ms. Blanton; application packets are due to her by Friday, December 1. Last year, Natalie Blaubach attended in the area of choral music.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL WINTER SPORTS STUDENT-ATHLETES: BASKETBALL, CHEER, SWIMMING, AND WRESTLING

Please review the Athletics Medical Information for Winter 2023-2024 to be sure you have completed everything prior to the October 25, 2023 deadline to participate in winter sports! This includes Concussion Baseline Testing which will be offered October 11 & 17 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. upstairs in the gym.

Softball workouts will be on Mondays and Thursdays going forward now that volleyball is over. Workouts will start at 4:00 p.m. and will consist of a mixture of fielding, hitting, strength training, speed and conditioning, and team bonding. Ladies of all talent levels are welcome - whether you have never played or play travel - we would love to have you join us!
