WELLNESS SERIES DURING ADVISORY

It was wonderful to see so many students and families at the Wellness Resource Fair Thursday night! Our Wellness Series advisory period kicks off this Wednesday, January 11 when we welcome Tiffanie Herring from NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health) and author of “Simply Deescalate” to share calming strategies and successful communication as well as dig a bit deeper into handling anxiety. Please reply by Monday to the email sent by Ms. Blanton about this opportunity if you would like to take part in this event.

Auditions for the spring performance of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown will be held tomorrow, Monday, January 9 immediately after school in the PAC. Rehearsals start on Friday, January 13 and will be held Mondays-Fridays from 2:30-3:45 p.m.

MARCH FOR LIFE

The NC March for Life will be held in Raleigh on Saturday, January 14 and students can attend by riding a JPII bus. Here is the schedule for the trip:

8:45 a.m. - Bus departs JPII for the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral
10:30 a.m. - Rosary in English/Spanish
11:00 a.m. - Mass for Life with Bishop Zarama (after Mass, drive to Halifax Hall, Downtown Mass)
12:30 p.m. - Band Starts; followed by Youth Rally/Speakers
2:30 p.m. - Rally Begins
5:15 p.m. - Bus returns to JPII

BUSCH GARDENS FIELD TRIP

All physics students and AP science students will be participating in a field trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg on Friday, May 12. We will be traveling by charter bus leaving at 6:30 a.m. and returning at 6:30 p.m. In addition to a self-guided program, physics comes alive with an interactive show hosted by renowned physics professor Dr. David Wright. Using wacky props and gripping experiments, Dr. Wright presents a vivid account of real-life physics. The cost is $130 and can be paid all at once by Feburary 15 or in installments:

Deposit due Feb. 15 - $50
2nd payment due March 15 - $50
Final Payment due April 15th -$30

TRIP PAYMENT FORM

The Winter Formal dance will take place Saturday, February 25 from 7:30-10:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are:

$8 now through January 20
$10 January 21-February 24
$12 at the door

A reminder that students who wish to invite a non-student to the dance must complete and submit to the main office the Event Guest Permission Form no later than Friday, February 18.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR 2023-2024 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

JPII partners with Global Horizons USA to promote our school to potential international students. However, these students need host families in order for them to attend JPII.

Hosting an international student is not only a great way to expand your knowledge of another culture but provides a wonderful opportunity for the student to experience yours. Along the way, they will make new friends and improve their use of the English language.

A host family is responsible for providing a loving environment and transportation to school. The students will cover all their expenses, including school tuition, health insurance, phone plan, etc, while in the USA.

We are looking for 5-10 families who would be willing to host an international student for the 2023-2024 school year. Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, families who receive financial aid can fulfill their service-to-school hours by hosting an international student. If you are interested in hosting a student, please email Mr. Smith.

Students taking the ACT this spring are invited to participate in FREE test prep sessions led by Mr. Schutt and Mr. Clark on the following Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Jan. 21, Jan. 28, Feb. 11, March 4, March 11, and Apr. 1. Participating students are encouraged to attend all sessions. The ACT is on April 4.

Inductions for National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math Honor Society, will be held this Thursday, January 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the PAC. Students being inducted need to arrive by 5:45 for instructions. Student attire is dress for success. Light reception to follow.

The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is the first step to becoming one of our nation's next generation of leaders. Current juniors considering the Naval Academy as their college of choice are strongly recommended to consider applying to Summer Seminar which introduces you to life at the Academy, where you will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training. Students participating in Science Olympiad can practice daily after school with Mrs. Lyles in her room. The regional competition is Saturday, February 18 at ECU.

FCA Huddle now meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays - the next is this Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in room S107 (Mr. Corley's room).

Dr. Parker will meet with current juniors and their parents/guardians Thursday, January 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the PAC to discuss the college admissions process, what services will be available in the spring, how to utilize SCOIR, and more. All juniors and their parents/guardians are highly encouraged to attend.

Scholarship season has arrived! Please check the CFNC scholarship page to see what scholarships are available. Deadlines start in January and will continue through the rest of the semester. If you need help with applications or essays, please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Parker.

Voluntary offseason workouts for track and field will begin on Tuesday, January 17. Workouts will run from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays until official practices begin on February 13. Email Coach Corley if you have any questions.

MULCH MADNESS RETURNS THIS SPRING!

We are bringing back our Mulch Madness all-school fundraiser this coming spring. Bags are 2 cubic feet of mulch (each bag covers 10-12 square feet 2 inches deep) in four colors that are $5 each. Orders will be accepted until Friday, March 10 and pickup will be Saturday, March 25. Orders of 25 or more bags can be delivered for few to addresses within 5 miles of the school. Don't need mulch? Consider purchasing bags and donating them to the school.
