BLACKBAUD LOGIN

Dear JPII family,

The beginning of the 2021-2022 school year is upon us and I am so excited to kick it off with tonight’s pool party at the Balots, Jump into JPII! for all of our new students on Monday and Tuesday, and our Back to School Open House on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.! As a faculty and staff we have been meeting and working hard to prepare for the students to arrive for the first day of school on Wednesday. Catholic education strives to meet the needs of the whole child and we are committed to continuing that tradition.

Please take the time to review the information below to be sure everyone is best prepared to start the school year. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we begin the school year with restrictions related to the COVID pandemic. The protocols in place will allow us to have the best opportunity for limited interruptions to our in-person school activities.

TONIGHT: BACK TO SCHOOL POOL PARTY

The Back to School Pool Party is TONIGHT from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the home of the Balot family (2997 Landing Circle in Grimesland). All students, parents /guardians, faculty, and staff are invited! Pizza and water will be provided by the Family Association; families are asked to bring a dessert to share (enough for 10-15 people).

JUMP INTO JPII!

Jump into JPII is our new student orientation led by JPII Crew leaders who will present sessions to help all incoming freshmen and transfer students transition to JPII. Jump into JPII will be held this Monday & Tuesday from 9:00 a.m.-12 noon. All incoming freshmen and transfer students should plan to attend both days.

New students do not need to follow the school dress code for Jump into JPII however they should dress modestly and appropriately. T-shirt and shorts are fine.

Parents and guardians are welcome to visit Tuesday morning from 9:00-10:00 a.m. for a Q&A session with coffee provided by the Family Association.

HAVE YOU LOGGED IN TO THE BLACKBAUD STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM?

If you have not yet logged in to Blackbaud SIS, please do so as soon as possible! As of today, 148 of our students and parents/guardians have not yet logged in - if you are one of them you will miss important school information including signing school forms such as the medical release form which will soon be pushed to parents through Blackbaud! Invitations to log in were resent to email addresses for those 148 people last night.

SUPPLY LIST

A reminder that all families are asked to provide the following general school supplies. New students can bring these items with them to Jump into JPII on August 16 or 17 or the first day of school on August 18; returning students should bring them with them on the first day of school (August 18).

•3 boxes of facial tissues (Kleenex, Puffs, etc.)

•4 reams of copy paper

•2 containers of hand sanitizer

•2 containers of disinfecting wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc.)

•4 (or more) chisel-tip EXPO markers – black

•4 (or more) chisel-tip EXPO markers – various colors

Here is the link to the student supply list for their classes. UPDATE: all chemistry students will need a pair of safety goggles similar to these (they do not need to be these exact goggles and students will not need them on the first day of school).

The first day of school for all students is THIS WEDNESDAY, August 18 which is a half day, dismissing at 12:05 p.m. Thursday will be the first full day of school.

Our Back to School Open House will be that evening starting at 5:30 p.m. We will begin with an opening session in the PAC and then allow time for everyone to visit classrooms and meet with teachers.

Since our spirit wear partners have not yet had the opportunity to add the new mascot logo as an option for apparel, we will have a limited supply of spirit wear hoodies with the new mascot logo for sale at the Back to School Open House!

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

ARRIVAL: Students who arrive between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. should enter the school through the dining hall doors. Students who arrive between 7:45 and 7:55 a.m. should enter the school through the front doors. All students should be in the school building no later than 7:55 a.m.

DISMISSAL: All students who will be picked up will go to the dining hall when the dismissal bell rings. Their ride should enter the school parking lot through the Quail Ridge entrance and drive through the lanes adjacent to the dining hall doors. If a student drives to school, they can exit using the doors closest to their assigned parking spot.

Unless a student is participating in an afterschool activity, they should be out of the school building by 4:00 p.m.

BUS SERVICE

Bus service from the Washington, Chocowinity, Vanceboro, and New Bern areas will start on the first day of school (August 18). Pick up in New Bern is at Saint Paul’s from 6:00-6:10 a.m. and in Washington at the old Food Lion parking lot on 264 from 7:00-7:10 a.m. On full days of school, drop off in the afternoon in Washington will be around 3:45-4:00 p.m. and in New Bern around 4:45-5:00 p.m. (afternoon times have been adjusted from what was on the website).

LUNCH ORDERING

Lunch ordering is now available with lunch service starting this Thursday, August 19. This year's vendors are:

• Monday - Parker's Barbecue

• Tuesday - Bagelman

• Wednesday - Jersey Mike's

• Thursday - Chick-fil-A

• Friday- Domino's

As a reminder, orders can be placed up until 12 noon the day before.

Returning families: you can use your account login information from last year. Click here to log in and update your student's profile to indicate if they have Lunch A or Lunch B.

New families: click here to create your account with My Hot Lunchbox. Be sure to find out from your student(s) if they have Lunch A or Lunch B and to indicate that in your account.

PARKING PERMITS

Students can request a parking permit by filling out this form with their parent/guardian (this is an online form that requires student and parent signatures so it may be best to complete the form on a phone or tablet). There is no fee for the permit. Students are reminded that parking at school is a privilege and failure to adhere to the rules (found on page 18 of the handbook) can result in the revoking of student parking privileges.

PEER MINISTRY

Juniors and seniors who are looking to grow in their own faith life and have an interest in leading the spiritual dimension of the JPII community are invited to become a part of the new peer ministry group. If you are interested in joining or have any questions about peer ministry, please email Mr. Zylis.

There will be a short informational meeting on Thursday, August 19 immediately after school in the PAC for any student interested in the fall play. Ms. Goodman will announce the show and audition requirements as well as answer any questions about the theater program. NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! (Want to participate, but not a fan of acting?? We have a need for you behind the scenes!)

Auditions will be held on Wednesday, August 25 immediately after school in the PAC.

SUMMER READING

Students need to have followed the summer reading listed below to start the year in English class:

Rising 9th graders - The Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible
Rising 10th graders - Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Rising 11th graders - Frankenstein
Rising 12th graders - Book of your choice with more than 100 pages (must be approved by Mr. Elliott)

STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK

The 2021-2022 Student-Parent Handbook has been published and can be found on the STUDENTS and FAMILIES pages on our website.

Of note, changes have been made to the Academic Intervention Program (found on page 28) and Dress Code (found on page 13). Students still need to wear polos in one of the four school colors (navy, white, yellow, or gray) on Mondays-Thursdays, but they do not need to wear a polo embroidered with the school logo unless instructed to do so by the school (therefore they still need to have at least one embroidered polo).

LINK OR RE-LINK YOUR VIC CARD TO JPII

Harris Teeter’s Together In Education program helps schools earn funds when you link your VIC card and shop Harris Teeter brands. Link your Harris Teeter VIC card to JPII either at a store customer service desk or online. We are listed as John Paul II High School (code 3082). All VIC cards must be linked yearly starting August 1, so if you've linked your VIC card to JPII in the past, you'll need to re-link it (at the link above or in a store).

MEN'S WRESTLING STARTS THIS WINTER!

Students who are interested in wrestling can prepare for the season with a set of FREE training sessions ($100 value) offered through the Greenville Wrestling Club and coach Greg Sisk. This is for ALL skill and experience levels. A USA Wrestling membership is required ($15) and can be purchased during training sessions.
