This week is the 49th annual observence of National Catholic Schools Week (CSW), an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Below are the activities planned to celebrate CSW at JPII.

STUDENTS: If you have not already, do not forget to nominate one of your peers for the Catholic Virtue Award; voting ends Sunday at midnight!

MONDAY

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC CULTURE

Students in select classes will participate in a rock painting project to enhance the area around the statue of Mary.

TUESDAY

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC PRAYER

Students will make rosaries in theology classes and select classes will participate in a walking rosary around the school.

WEDNESDAY

CELEBRATING THE MASS

Students will attend Mass with Fr. Gaston who will bless the rosaries they make on Tuesday. Wednesday is also Fr. Gaston's birthday!

THURSDAY

CELEBRATING VOCATIONS

Students in select classes will hear from Deacon Rick Fisher from St. Paul in New Bern or missionaries from Vagabond Missionaries.

FRIDAY

CELEBRATING CHRIST

Students will participate in a Eucharistic Procession during 7th period that will end in praise and worship in the PAC. Students are encouraged to wear this year's theme shirt and jeans (no rips or holes!). The Catholic Virtue Award recipients will be announced at morning assembly.

LET'S HELP FR. GASTON'S "LITTLE ANGELS"

As part of Catholic Schools Week, we are collecting donations to present to Fr. Gaston at Mass on Wednesday for his birthday so he can help his "little angels." Who are his "little angels?" Watch the video below!

BUSCH GARDENS FIELD TRIP DEPOSITS DUE FEB. 15

All physics students and AP science students will be participating in a field trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg on Friday, May 12. We will be traveling by charter bus leaving at 6:30 a.m. and returning at 6:30 p.m. In addition to a self-guided program, physics comes alive with an interactive show hosted by renowned physics professor Dr. David Wright. Using wacky props and gripping experiments, Dr. Wright presents a vivid account of real-life physics. The cost is $130 and can be paid all at once by February 15 or in installments:

Deposit due Feb. 15 - $50
2nd payment due March 15 - $50
Final Payment due April 15th -$30

TRIP PAYMENT FORM

The Winter Formal dance will take place Saturday, February 25 from 7:30-10:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are:

$10 January 21-February 24
$12 at the door

A reminder that students who wish to invite a non-student to the dance must complete and submit to the main office the Event Guest Permission Form no later than Friday, February 17.

MULCH MADNESS RETURNS THIS SPRING!

We are bringing back our Mulch Madness all-school fundraiser this coming spring. Bags are 2 cubic feet of mulch (each bag covers 10-12 square feet 2 inches deep) in four colors that are $5 each. Orders will be accepted until Friday, March 10 and pickup will be Saturday, March 25. Orders of 25 or more bags can be delivered for few to addresses within 5 miles of the school. Don't need mulch? Consider purchasing bags and donating them to the school.

Students who need Christian Service Hours can volunteer at Catholic Charities on the following dates from 9:30-11:30 a.m.:

February 25
March 25
April 22

Volunteers will be packing food boxes distributed to the Rocky Mount and Tarboro area by the Catholic Charities mobile food pantry.

Students love to stop by the main office for a piece of candy and we are about out! If you are shopping for Valentine's Day candy and would like to donate some to the main office, we'd love to have it! Thanks in advance!

INAKI NEEDS A HOST FAMILY FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR

Inaki is a motivated and enthusiastic student from Spain who has chosen JPII as his top option over all the schools who partner with Global Horizons. He has a passion for paddle tennis and motocross. He is helpful in nature and enjoys fixing things such as bikes. He has a love for boats and cars and is also an animal lover. In addition, he likes to cook and has aspirations of becoming a doctor in the future.

Hosting an international student is not only a great way to expand your knowledge of another culture but provides a wonderful opportunity for the student to experience yours. Along the way, they will make new friends and improve their use of the English language.

A host family is responsible for providing a loving environment and transportation to school. The students will cover all their expenses, including school tuition, health insurance, phone plan, etc, while in the USA.

We are looking for 5-10 families who would be willing to host an international student for the 2023-2024 school year. Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, families who receive financial aid can fulfill their service-to-school hours by hosting an international student. If you are interested in hosting a student, please email Mr. Smith.

If you have a rising 9th grade student (or know of one) who intends on attending JPII next year and has not yet applied, we encourage you to do so now. Applications for next year's freshman class are more than double the number we had at this time last year and we've already increased the number of seats to meet the demand. Existing families who want to submit an application for a new student should log in to SchoolAdmin and click on “Add a new student.”

Athletic Trainer Julia Digiacomo will administer concussion baseline testing for students who are participating in spring sports but have not yet had a concussion baseline test this year.

The final deadline for purchasing a senior ad for the 2022-23 yearbook is Feb. 9, 2023. The ads must be purchased directly through Josten's. If you have any questions,email Mr. Corley.

The VolunTEEN Program at ECU Health Medical Center is designed to teach students ages 15-17 the value of community service and to provide experiences that foster growth and maturity. Assignments provide an opportunity for students to learn and explore healthcare careers. The program lasts for 8 weeks starting in June and ending in August. ECU Health VolunTEENs serve in transport areas, main lobbies, surgery waiting areas, nursing units, and various other departments. Click here for complete details. CONGRATS SAINTS SWIMMERS!

Swimming had a full weekend with swim meets both Friday and Saturday. Results are not yet available for Friday's meet but the Saints swimmers won Saturday's meet beating both Wayne Christian and Greenfield! The final score was JPII 119, Wayne Christian 113, and Greenfield 80. Many swimmers also achieved personal bests, including:
