Dear JPII family,

To give time for road conditions to improve on Monday, school will operate on a two-hour delay and we will utilize the following modified Mass Day schedule:

9:30 a.m. - dining dall doors open

9:45 - front doors open; students report to 3rd period classrooms;

10:00 - morning announcements via intercom

10:10-10:56 - 3rd period

11:00-11:40 - 4th Period
11:40-12:06 - Lunch A
11:44-12:24 - 5th B
12:10-12:50 - 5th A
12:24-12:50 - Lunch B
12:54-1:34 - 6th Period
1:38-2:18 - 7th Period
2:22-3:02 - 8th Period

Yesterday, parents of 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students should have received information via email from Mr. Smith about re-enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. If you did not receive an email, please contact Mr. Smith (email or 252-481-5317). Re-enrollment is very important as we plan for class offerings and put together student schedules for next year. While on the topic of enrollment, if you know of a family who might be interested in JPII for their child(ren), please let Mr. Smith know. A big thank you to Mrs. Roseborough who brought two prospective families to last week's basketball games and connected them with Mr. Smith!

Lastly, I want to thank all of our parents but especially those who have encouraged their students to maintain their academics through remote learning whether it be the week we returned from Christmas or if your student has had to be out due to COVID or other seasonal sicknesses. There is no such thing as over-communicating when it comes to making sure that the main office and teachers are aware if a student is going to have to miss school.

JPII CREW FOR 2022-2023

The application for current sophomores and juniors (2022-2023 juniors and seniors) to apply for JPII Crew for the 2022-2023 school year is open now through February 1, 2022.

JPII Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and transfer students and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their JPII experience. As positive role models, JPII Crew leaders are mentors and student leaders who help students new to JPII discover what it takes to be a successful Saint. More information about the role of a JPII Crew leader can be found on the school website.

Selections will be made based on the application as well as how applicants conduct themselves on a day-to-day basis (behavior, academics, leadership potential/qualities, etc.).

JPII CREW APPLICATION

BUSCH GARDENS PHYSICS TRIP DEPOSITS DUE NEXT MONDAY

Mrs. Lyles has organized a trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for all physics students (Conceptual and AP) on Friday, May 13. The bus will leave at 7:30 a.m. and return to school at 6:00 p.m. In addition to a self-guided program, physics comes alive with an interactive show hosted by renowned physics professor Dr. David Wright. Using wacky props and gripping experiments, Dr. Wright presents a vivid account of real-life physics. The cost for each student is $130 (students who would like to go but the trip poses a financial hardship for the family should see Mrs. Lyles). The payment can be made all at once by January 31 or in installments:

January 31: $30 deposit or full payment
March 1: $50 payment
April 1: $50 payment

OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION WINDOW OPENS FEBRUARY 1

Families who are eligible for the NC Opportunity Scholarship can now receive up to $5,928 toward tuition and fees at JPII. If you know a family for whom paying full tuition would be a financial hardship, please share this information with them. More information can be found here.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING

Fr. Ian will hold another altar server training session tomorrow, Monday, January 24 immediately after school in the Performing Arts Center.

COST OF VALENTINE'S DANCE TICKETS GO UP TOMORROW
Freshmen Class SGA is hosting the Valentine's Dance on Saturday, February 12 from 7:00-10:30 p.m. in the PAC. Tickets are:

$5 per person through TODAY
$7 per person tomorrow-February 11
$10 at the door

Nominations are now open for Valentine's Queen, Princess, Duchess, and Countess of Hearts; nominations will close on Friday, January 28.

IMMUNIZATION REMINDER FOR JUNIORS

Beginning with the 2020-21 school year, students entering 12th grade are required to have a booster (second) dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine if they have not already received one. As you get your physicals this year, please turn in your immunization record to Ms. Blanton. We will need this in your file prior to the first day of senior year.

PREPARING FOR SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Students who are participating in Science Olympiad can stay after school every day from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in N115 to work on their events.

Parent volunteers are still needed to help on competition day (February 5). Click here if you would like to help.

GIRLS SOCCER PRESEASON WORKOUTS

The preseason workout schedule for girls soccer can now be found on the Athletics calendar.

MASK PAYMENTS WILL POST TO SMART TUITION ACCOUNTS IN FEBRUARY

As previously shared, masks at the main office are now $1 each. Parents of students who came to the office in need of a mask and did not pay the $1 fee will see the fee(s) show up on their Smart Tuition accounts when payments post in February.

WOMEN'S VARSITY BASKETBALL RAFFLE

The women's varsity basketball team is holding a raffle ticket fundraiser with some great prizes! The drawing will be held on February 4.

1st Prize: 4 tickets to the Syracuse vs. UNC men's basketball game on February 28
2nd Prize: 2 tickets to the Boston College vs. NC State men's basketball game on February 23
3rd Prize: $100 Massage Envy gift card
4th Prize: $75 VISA gift card
5th Prize: 2022-2023 JPII All-Season Sports Pass (regular-season home games)
Bonus: Duke Women's Basketball Gift Package (includes an autographed shirt, 2 tickets for a game against Florida State in Cameron on February 10, and a gift card)

All proceeds go to the women's basketball program in an effort to provide the best student-athlete experience. Money will be used for team gear, accessories (book bags, sneakers), future team trips, skill development equipment, and any other expenses that will help alleviate out-of-pocket costs for our student-athletes and parents.

Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. To participate, you can Venmo the school (@JPIICatholic) and include "Women's Basketball Raffle" in the "What's it for?" section.

A total of 215 awards that are valued at $14,000 ($3,500 per year for up to four years) for NC high school students attending a participating NC college or university. Learn more at CFNC.org.

NEW PHOTO SHARING SITE: PIXEVETY
Over the Christmas break we announced that photos from school-related activities are going to be accessible through a new partnership with Pixevety, a photo sharing site designed exclusively for schools. Pixevety acts as an extension of our school by helping improve the sharing of school-related photos and video amongst the school, students, and parents/guardians.

All students and parents/guardians should have received a personalized email invitation to join Pixevety on December 20. We decided to partner with Pixevety for several reasons, including:

the platform is built on global eSafety and privacy-by-design principles, ensuring protection is attached to every image and we as a school have complete control over file sharing, permissions, and consent
the platform provides members of the school community who do not have a profile on the social media channels where we post photos from school events the opportunity to view our photos
we often receive requests for photos of students from parents creating yearbook ads - Pixevety’s secure facial recognition will aid in locating photos of your student (we will enable downloading of photos at some point in the near future)
photos from school events can be crowdsourced when students and parents/guardians contribute photos and videos to the school’s library (coming soon)
