This week is the annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week which focuses on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation. Below are this year's activities:

Sunday

-Students can start voting for this year's Virtue Awards

Monday

-Seniors will be of service to residents at Cypress Glen Retirement Community

Tuesday

-Students will participate in a walking rosary during Theology classes

Wednesday

-Mass with Fr. Gaston and celebrate his birthday

-SGA will lead the making of bag lunches for Community Crossroads

-Voting for this year's Virtue Awards ends

Thursday

-Prayer Partner intentions during assembly

-Parents recognized for their support of Catholic education

Friday

-Students can wear their "JPII FAMILY" theme shirt with pajama pants to school by bringing a dollar with them to school for Fr. Gaston's Little Angels (students donate the dollar as they enter the building on Friday - no dollar, no PJs!)

-Virtue Awards announced at assembly

-Rosary Making Club from 2:30-3:15 p.m.

-The St. Peter Catholic School community has been invited to join us for our basketball games

Saturday & Sunday

-Selected students will serve at all Masses at St. Peter as lectors, gift bearers, etc.

LOW COUNTRY BOIL REGISTRATION

It is almost time to start re-enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year! Families will receive information in mid-February about how to re-enroll their student(s) in Finalsite. For now, families should:

1) Prepare to submit an Opportunity Scholarship during February (information below)

2) Families who receive need-based financial aid from the school will need to complete an Opportunity Scholarship application and a FACTS Grant & Aid application to be eligible to continue receiving financial aid.

ALL FAMILIES ARE NOW ELIGIBLE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP - MAKE PLANS NOW TO APPLY ON FEB. 1

The Opportunity Scholarship Program is offered by the State of North Carolina and provides up to $7,213 per year toward tuition and fees for students who choose to attend a participating nonpublic school such as JPII.

Families are encouraged to create a NCSEAA MyPortal account now in preparation for submitting an Opportunity Scholarship application during the month of February. Families must apply by March 1 to receive priority consideration.

NEED HELP SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION? Families who need help submitting an Opportunity Scholarship applictation can receive assistance on February 5th or 15th at 6:00 p.m. upstairs in the gym or by appointment during the school day by contacting Business Manager Mary Ershadi.

Our school is listed as “John Paul II Catholic H. S.” with the NCSEAA.

Auditions for the spring play (The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales) will be held Friday, February 16th (half day of school) from 12-1pm in the PAC. Please come prepared with a memorized monologue. See Ms. Goodman with any questions!

Every Wednesday morning throughout the school year WITN recognizes a teacher during their News at Sunrise. We have many great teachers - please consider nominating your favorite by sending an email to TOTW@witn.com. Include details of why you think your teacher should be chosen and specific examples of their hard work.

MS. THOMSEN'S WEEKLY STUDY TIPS

Study Tip #17 (UPDATED): “ACT Test Prep Tips Part 2" These Reading Test tips are especially directed toward slower readers (like me!) who have trouble finishing within the time limit. Since the Reading Test is 35 minutes long and has four passages with 10 questions in each one, this video shows you how to read less of the passage, so you can spend more time on the questions. Practicing your reading strategy will help you feel more confident on test day. There are also tips on how to approach questions to identify the correct answers.

Each week, I will post a new video (3-5 minutes). You can also join my "JPII Weekly Study Tips" Google Classroom to download the materials. The class code is vsffbqf. If you missed a week, a playlist is available at the top of the “Classwork” page so you can watch all of the videos. Also, I am at JPII every afternoon: 6th period in S105 and 7th period in S104, and 2:30-3:30 in S104, so stop by!

TAR HEEL STATE APPLICATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 21

Juniors interested in Tar Heel Boys and Girls State: applications are now available and due by February 21, 2024. This is a great opportunity for a week-long residential experience in forming and running all levels of city and state government. Please see Ms. Blanton with any questions.

MULCH MADNESS RETURNS!

Bags are 2 cubic feet of mulch (each bag covers 10-12 square feet 2 inches deep) in four colors that are $5 each. Orders will be accepted until Tuesday, March 19 and pickup will be Saturday, March 23. Orders of 25 or more bags can be delivered for free to addresses within 5 miles of the school. Don't need mulch? Consider purchasing bags and donating them to the school.

Mrs. K would like to recognize and thank sophomore Chris Goetz for his kindness and enthusiasm. Monday's cold temperatures left the pottery lab without water and without water there is no pottery. Undeterred, Chris asked if there was anything he could do to help. He reclaimed over 50 pounds of clay which was a huge help to Mrs. K. Thanks Chris! Kindness always counts.

Students who are interested in serving as alter servers during Mass should plan to attend a training on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the PAC.

Candygrams for Valentine's Day are on sale now through February 9th! They are 1 for $3 or 4 for $10 and will be delivered on Valentine's Day during lunch.
